Friday is the day before the inauguration of the project. In other words it´s no normal working day. On the one hand, we don´t have a whole lot to do. On the other, we have to make sure we get all the details of the preparations together. We all roll out of our sleeping bags around nine or even later. After the usual morning procedures, one group sets off for the work site where they get busy with finishing touches: painting the black socks (the base of the Jungle Gym pole bases), the white window frames as well as the white first coat in the second kindergarden room. meanwhile the second group gets ready to go shopping. This turns into an adventure since it´s Maria´s trial drive with Zoleka´s car. The car doesn´t start until she discovers a few buttons to press in order to turn on the ignition. Then she has to get used to driving on the left side of the road. All of us don´t know the route to the Van Gate Shopping Center by experience. However, in the end we do get there. At Pick ´n Pay we fill 3 shopping carts: one for the home kitchen and two for the inauguration (everything from paper cups to goodies for sandwiches). We drive the three shopping carts to the parking lot and pack the content into the car. The car is full. That means Maria has to bring the stuff home and come back to get us. This gives us the chance to do some personal shopping or simply go and drink a coffee. Anna and Daphne go shopping. Carol drinks a Latte at Mugs and Beans coffee shop. Outside the assistant at the parking lot is keeping a lookout for Maria. He remembers every car that parks on the parking lot.
Lunch is late today because we get back from shopping so late. At about three o´clock we all get back to the site to clean up the grounds. First we light a fire to burn all the old wood and cement bags. Since we have to make room for a tent seating about fifty persons we have to get rid of one of the sand piles on the site. Someone has the brilliant idea to move the sand into the sandpit. So we get busy and shovel the sand into the sandpit. Finally we remove the tape from the Jungle Gym poles and level the ground in the playing area. Unfortunately the tent doesn´t arrive before we leave for home. Shortly after we get back and start with supper there is a knock at the kitchen door. The tent has arrived. So Zoleka has to return to the site to make sure the tent ends up in the right place.
The evening is unspectacular: soup for supper, outside it´s raining while the poker club plays a round. A few are suffering from colds. Most of us retire early because we have an unpredictable day ahead of us: who will come? will there be enough food? what will the weather be like? will the program be a drag with numerous long speeches? Saturday we´ll know. For now, good night.
